Free Comic Book Day

For a few years now, the first weekend in May has hosted "Free Comic Book Day" across the U.S. and Canada, designed to recruit some new followers and promote the latest Marvel superhero movie (this years, it's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine"). We decided this would be the perfect excuse to take Carter and Nathaniel out for a stroll, and when we arrived at The Silver Snail, were were delighted to find the staff had gone all out:

Greeting customers at the door was "Dr. Manhattan" from "Watchmen", who was mercifully clothed for the occassion and kindly stepped outside to pose with the boys.

Inside, a Star Wars stormtrooper looked out for shoplifters...

...and in back, a member of The Dharma Initiative (from TV's "Lost"--the most awesome television show of all time), Superman's pal Jimmy Olsen (in fact, my friend Kellam Templeton-Smith)...

...Dr. Elijah Snow (from "Planetary") and DC's The Vigilante served the long lineup of fans eager to get their mitts on some free books.

I scored the boys 10 titles, including a "Cars" tie-in, "Star Wars: The Clone Wars", "Owly", "G.I. Joe", and a few others (I got "Alien" for myself--which might be a bit too much for the boys until they're a little older). I've already started a collection for the boys--bags and boards of course, and no filling out the coupons!

Outside the shop, the stormtrooper and The Green Lantern took a moment from crime fighting to pose with the boys before we sped back home to beat the sudden rain. As a lifelong fan of this stuff, to have seen something like this as a kid would've blown my mind. Sure, the little guys slept through most of it, but it won't be their first time--as long as this stays an annual tradition the fun is just beginning...

On the way back, we stopped by the L&M Trading Post on Queen Street to pick up a Superman, Batman, and "Animal" from The Muppet Show for the boys...the staff were delighted to meet Carter and Nathaniel (and showed off photos of their own grandchildren) and said they look forward to seeing them become regular customers. As long as the comics are free, I guess we'll have a little extra scratch left in our pockets to take them back once in awhile...
